Was waiting a few days to let it simmer and see if my opinion of the book would change. It hasn't. While I enjoyed reading the book for the bits of cultural glimpses, I still give it 2 stars out of 5 and can honestly say I will never be tempted to re-read it.

In Book 2 I suddenly realized how irritating it was that the characters all had these leaps of intuition that always guided them down the right path. It was too neat. Each time it came up, it was difficult not to roll my eyes. Yes it is an odd sort of story and I applaud the author's ability at slowly unfolding and revealing the plot in tiny bits, and also for mixing complicated explanations about the air chrysalis with very funny sections on how to effectively kick a man in the balls. Unfortunately, the book didn't have enough depth or complexity for me to enjoy a book this size. Maybe a more compact one would have worked. I have to go re-read all those glowing comments that got me to buy this book in the first place. Maybe I'm missing something.

I admit, I'm still tempted to read Wind Up Bird.

I'm 80 percent through the first two books and so far I have to absolutely agree with you. There's definitely a lot of eye-rolling involved.
I'll reserve judgement until I'm through all three books but I doubt this will enter my all-time favourites.
